Will the  Solar Panels be fixed to the tiles on my roof?

Accepted Answer

No, Solar panels are typically mounted on Stainless Steel and Aluminium rail system that is fixed to the rafters on a typical pitched roof and using adequate ballast on flat concrete roofs. The PV system is designed to maintain the strength and integrity of your roof, whilst remaining watertight.

Should I have a South Facing roof ?

South facing roofs are best suited for solar generation, however, east and west may generate similar or even better returns, by installing some on the East and some on the West. North facing roofs are best avoided. A well designed ground-mounted system is a viable option if the other options are not available

Will Shading from large Trees and Buildings affect the output?

Accepted Answer

As a general rule of thumb, if they are within 10m of your house then shading from these objects will affect the output and should be avoided at all costs. Our designers/surveyors will perform a shade analysis as part of any survey conducted and will highlight any shading issues as part of your quotation. There are technologies available that can reduce the effect of shading, however it is worth checking this over with one of our solar design engineers.

Is there a New scheme to replace the Feed in Tariff?

Yes, the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) scheme came into effect beginning of this year (2020)  and the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) is the route to access.
 
Under the SEG, energy suppliers will be required by law to offer a payment for the electricity households with SOLAR PV panels export to the grid. The legislation puts a legal obligation on energy suppliers with over 150,000 customers to introduce export tariffs by 1st January 2020. MCS certification will be a requirement to qualify for the SEG, helping to safeguard high standards in the industry.

Do we need Planning Permission to install Solar Panels?

Under the Permitted Development Act, planning permission will not be required to install a roof-mounted solar PV system up to 50kWp in size. Planning is required if the building is listed or if it is located in a Conservation Area. In the case of Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the planning laws have relaxed considerably in recent years, however, it is always best to check with the relevant local authority.
For larger or ground-mounted systems, you may need planning permissions; we can help you with that.

The Product Warranty of Solar Panels is about 10 – 15 years depending on the make. This can be extended, however the performance warranty is usually around 25 years

No, the Solar PV system has no moving parts so needs no essential servicing. Every 5 years or so cleaning the panels with some clean water will help maintain peak performance.

Yes, you can. With Li-ion battery storage devices getting cheaper by the month you can now use the electricity generated in the daytime at night.
