Green ostrich leather

My Story & Philosophy

T58-7021crop.jpeg

I have worked with leather for many years and made pieces for friends and family as well as for myself.  I have always been driven to create; leather craft is a very satisfying outlet for this creativity.

Over the last couple of years I have been enjoying raising the technical standards of my leatherwork to a point that I am happy to show my output in the public domain.  I have also broadened the range of suppliers from which I source the highest quality leathers.  Along with traditional leathers such as firm hide and soft calf, I now use more exotic skins such as beaver tail, ostrich and stingray.

Artisan-made goods appeal to those who want something unique and not of the mainstream.   They also appeal to those who appreciate the merits of the handmade rather than the mass produced.  I design every piece myself, make every piece entirely by hand, using no machines at all and never make two pieces the same.  Each design begins with a sketch and potentially suitable pieces of leather.

Over the years I have made belts and boxes, wallets and watch straps along with tool rolls and travel wallets.  The most popular items have always been card holders which I call  “Date night” wallets.  Although we increasingly pay with mobile devices, most of us still feel the need to carry a card and a few notes when we leave home and the card holder addresses this need perfectly.  They are easy to carry whether in a jeans or jacket pocket.  There are examples of some of these in the gallery.

As well as items available in stock I am happy to make an item bespoke for you and have already started doing this for clients.  Choosing the leathers and colour combinations to suit an individual's taste is an integral part of the creative process.  You may want something that pops with colour or prefer more classic colour combinations.  Choice is everything in the world of bespoke leather goods!

Guy Robertson Leather Promises:

  • Every piece is saddle stitched, entirely by hand, by me.

  • Indeed every piece is entirely produced by hand, by me, with no use of any kind of machine.

  • Every piece is designed by me and starts with a sketch and potentially suitable pieces of leather.

Naturally all artists take inspiration from others.  I study the products of top end retailers such as Hèrmes and Bottega Venetta and especially of other artisan makers.  There is an amazing worldwide community of talented people who generously post images of their work and details of their techniques on line.
